The new Sportage SUV is a leap in ride and handling for Kia.
The new Sportage SUV diesel is a step up for Kia. In keeping with a value for money philosophy, the new model delivers a stylish, but practical package, good dynamics, a strong diesel engine, and that warmly welcomed 5-year warranty. Unfortunately it disappoints with its un-adjustable steering wheel, vision-impairing windscreen pillars and certain cosmetic touches. Nonetheless, it’s a step in the right direction for Kia.
The range includes three models. The base Si (from $25,990) is a front-wheel drive, powered by its 2.0-litre petrol engine. On the other hand, there is the leather-clad Platinum flagship model is a four-wheel-drive decked out with all the bells and whistles, including keyless entry, sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, and a electric, ventilated and heated driver’s seat. This model sports a more commanding 2.4-litre petrol four-cylinder or a 2.0-litre turbo diesel – its up to you. The diesel engine commands a $3000 price premium though, making the most expensive variant $38,990 (plus on-road costs).
The mid range model is the SLi – we will look specifically to the diesel variant… With a price tag of $34,990, the diesel SLi isn’t exactly the “bargain” of the compact soft-roader segment. Nonetheless, it is packed to the rafters with equipment. Dual-zone climate control air-conditioning, cruise control, power windows, a trip computer and automatic transmission are all standard. Bluetooth connectivity is omitted, but it set to be introduced across all models in the range by late October. iPod integration is also included, with 2 open power outlets – annoying for the burglar-conscious driver who has to pack it away every time they leave the vehicle.
The five-year unlimited kilometre warranty is also a major plus.
Official crash test results haven’t been publicized yet, but safety features seem adequate – with stability control, six airbags, adjustable headrests and more. The rear-view mirrors are also a screen for a reversing camera and there’s the additional option of rear parking sensors, for a reasonable $500 extra.
The benefits of the diesel are stark – arguably, the economic benefits alone offset the 3 grand premium. Claimed fuel figures come in at about 7.5L/100km (almost 20 percent better than the petrol variant). At a hefty 1.9 tons though, these figures do seem idealistic (we’re thinking more around to 10L/100km mark).
Cruising, surging and progress are all above average. Some drivers might struggle with the comfort level, due to reach adjustment (specifically, lack thereof). There is height adjustment at least. The small rear windscreen and windscreen pillar do serve as impediments to driver vision too. This is somewhat made up for with the reversing camera for parking though. Minimal grievances aside, the Sportage Diesel is a capable vehicle, with reasonably good steering and a direct responsiveness when cornering. Moreover, suspension is absorbent in most conditions, but a tad firm at times.
The interior matches the outer, in terms of its smart looks. Restrained yet stylish, the interior aesthetic incorporates intelligent angles and finishes. Use of plastics is well intentioned and purported to cut costs, but may be received by some as tacky. Twin cupholders, storage areas and bins, and the glove box all add to the reasonable level of storage space. The high positioning of the radio is functional, but the radio’s ability to cope with bass-thudding music is not as impressive. Other well-presented details include the instrument cluster, clean black cloth seats, fine-textured roof lining, and silver accents and highlights.
Rear space is good, but could be better largely due limited legroom. The back seats split-fold too to improve loading flexibility for bulky items.
Star rating = about 4 stars.

The Sportage is 1700~ kg, not 1900. I’ve just bought a diesel.I’ve done around 400 km city/country. I’m getting 8.5 litres/100. I’m not pushing it hard as it’s not run in, but I’m impressed with the fuel economy. It does need a bigger fuel tank. 50 litres not enough. It’s not perfect but I can’t go past the practicality, economy, reasonable grunt and the Platinum’s bells and whistles. Good value for money.
