Lexus has spawned yet another capable offspring, the new Lexus CT 200h. Although the incorporation of two driving modes is a feature more reminiscent of the Japanese brand’s larger IS range, the new model features both hot hatch style and more fuel-thrifty modes.
Essentially it’s a hybrid vehicle – given there’s a capable 1.8 litre VVT-i engine, complemented by an efficient electric motor. Switching between modes is simple, with the incorporation of a simple control clasp in the cabin.
Switching between the modes allows the vehicle to run simultaneously on the electric motor, or under the complete power of the potent engine. Motorists can therefore opt for whichever mode – ECO or SPORT (or both) – depending on their driving “mood” and at the switch of a toggle.
The selection of the “EV” button will kickstart the car into a solely electric-powered vehicle, with a near zero sip-rate. Unfortunately, you won’t exceed 50km/hr when driving in this mode. In ECO mode, the sip rate is just 4.1L/100km and 96g CO2/km. Alternatively, sport mode offers more aggressive acceleration, subsequently increasing the fuel consumption.
There is much more to Lexus’ new baby than the fuel consumption rates though. Switching of modes (i.e. switching of “moods”) also instigates a change in the in-car atmosphere – the instrument layout and lighting that is. When in SPORT mode, the lighting changes to red, while the ECO charge and discharge gauge changes to a lit-up tacho.
The new CT 200h will be showcased in its full-production trim at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. Production for introduction to the European automotive market will begin shortly thereafter.
What about Down Under I hear many of you asking? Unfortunately for us Aussies, we won’t be able to get our grubby little hands on this beauty until the middle of next year (2011). Undoubtedly though, it’s worth waiting for.
