2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG Review

The Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG is a little slice of paradise with style, precision and speed rolled into one.

With a new twin-turbo engine, it’s no wonder the AMG is becoming more and more popular in Australia. However, with a price tag of $423,300 plus on-road costs, the CL63 AMG is one of Mercedes-Benzes most expensive vehicles with just two doors.

There are plenty of bells and whistles to make up for the price. An example is the extremely supportive leather seats that also have active bolsters, so you can be pushed back into the comfortable position, no matter how you are driving.

Radar cruise control, drowsiness detection, stability control, a lane departure system which steers the car back into the correct lane if it veers out and a blind-spot warning system are just some of the electronics to look forward to.

The Command control system works fairly well, however it could be improved with more reasonable buttons such as a volume knob.

It would have been more productive if a full-size spare tyre was included instead of a space-saver as the 20-inch wheels are quite large and at the rear, the tyres are 275mm.

Under the hood is impressive. With just a 5.5L engine, it is still more powerful due to the two turbos that were added. At the highest point of power the AMG reached 400Kw.

The CL63 is able to zoom through traffic comfortably due to the impressive torque and large amount of low-rev response. It is still able to charge on at 1500rpm. The accelerator can burst to life with one touch and reach 100km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Fuel costs will not be a problem in this car as it could manage 13 litres per 100 kilometres and obviously contributing to this fact is the stop-start system which shuts down the engine when the car is not moving.

Driving a luxury car should feel like floating on air and the CL63 AMG delivers. The brakes are able to stop the car with ease and although the large tyres do not like the sharp bumps, it can glide over open roads for hours.

The outside matches the inside in relation to style. There are luxurious bucket seats with more than enough room and due to the large doors, opening them in parking areas should be done with care. It is also possible to block out traffic noise with the double-glazed windows, however nothing can stop the large tyres screeching against coarse bitumen.

If a new car is on the horizon for you, The CL63 AMG combines luxury and style to add a touch of class to every trip.
