BMW to Create Front-Wheel Drive Cars

Prestigious German automotive brand, BMW, has never been a front-wheel drive vehicle manufacturer. But like all things BMW, anything is possible. Norbert Reithofer, BMW executive has recently confirmed BMW’s intentions to manufacture a small BMW front-wheel drive model, remarking “There will be front-wheel drive BMW’s in the smaller vehicle classes in the future.”

Despite years of trumpeting the dynamic superiority of rear-wheel drive vehicles, BMW is set to take advantage of this growing segment, possibly exploring the development of joint architecture for front and four-wheel drive systems. With the cost structure differing from that of the larger car class, BMW expects this segment to grow profitably.

With the application of modular manufacturing kits for different models/brands, BMW (in theory) will cut costs without compromising product quality. These “mini BMWs” differ from the “BMW Minis”, and are likely to become strong contenders in the luxury subcompact market. Furthermore, their average fuel economy and emissions are set to make these vehicles not only efficient, but in compliance with upcoming legislation in Europe and the US.

Aimed at a fresh generation of buyers, BMW is set to offer a cheaper gateway into automotive prestige.
