Brief Look: Subaru WRX ‘Rex’

Its surprising but believe it – the beasty Subaru WRX has changed considerably since its mid-90s debut, yet the price tag has not. Still priced from $39,990, the 2011 ‘Rex’ update is arguably the bargain of the year. It performs, its strong, and its safe – three huge qualities most of us look for in a car.

The WRX has changed cosmetically however – the Rex sedan has a tougher presence on account of its blister mudguards, quad exhaust tips, and an audaciously angular front bumper with inset foglights and rear air diffuser. The overall impact is perfection.

The updates and revisions don’t end here though. The Rex is wider and sturdier due to a wider front and rear track and wider 17-inch alloy wheels decked out in a stunning light gunmetal shade. Moreover, the rear suspension has been tweaked, while dark paint-outs and interior dark fascia make for a seriously brawny look.

Under the bonnet we find the usual setup and output (195kW/343Nm). The sprint rate is expectantly commendable – around 0-100km/hr in 5 seconds or thereabouts.

At 1450kg she’s heavier, but then again there is a bigger (and better) equipment kit including Bluetooth, capable audio setup, wheel controls, cruise control and climate control aircon.

Sipping on 95-octane, she guzzles about 10.4L/100km.

The ride is surprisingly softer than one might expect, becoming problematic if you push too hard when cornering or trundling over bumpy roads. Grip is aided by rear limited-slip differential, helping her capably manage in slippery conditions.

She delivers best at the high-rev range – this is where her sporty performance really kicks in, but there’s torque galore in the lower ranges too.

An extra cog wouldn’t go astray.

Internally, she’s generous – both in terms of comfort and space. What lacks is a bit of design finesse – the dash integrates too much hard plastic and gives off a cheap vibe.

The only main criticism would be a lack of dual mode suspension.

For the most part however, most Sooby enthusiasts (and others) will thoroughly appreciate the way the Rex looks, sounds, and drives.
