Ferrari Unveils Upcoming 4WD Model

Supercar manufacturer Ferrari has recently unveiled its groundbreaking four-wheel drive model, the FF (aka Ferrari Four). The radical FF, which features a four-seat layout and four wheel drive transmission, marks a notorious deviation for the brand, which has always been defined by its penchant for powerful rear-drive sports cars.

The FF is already in hot demand, with more than 10 Aussie punters ordering the upcoming model that marks a move towards everyday usability and a departure from the usual propensity towards fast, stylish (and often unpractical) cars.

Following on from the latest Ferrari which also seats four passengers, the new model has been described by brand reps as “a decisive break with the past”, representing a “revolution”, as opposed to an evolution. The unusually shaped model reportedly incorporates a curvaceous bulb-like rear end similar to BMW’s Z3, both of which call to mind the image of a bread van. The shape however is a plus for taller passengers as it offers significantly enhanced headroom.

According to a Ferrari press release, the new FF is targeted at well-off punters keen to drive their Ferrari more often and in every condition, rather than just as an infrequent joy-ride or novelty.

According to Ferrari PR reps, the move follows extensive feedback from customers who wanted a Ferrari they could use frequently and flexibly. Kitted out with a V12 engine, 4WD setup, 485kW output and impressive sprint rate, the FF is the brand’s answer to these pleas.

It also seems the brand has abandoned its typically thirsty roots and paid attention to the eco-conscious calls of society; the 4WD system is actually 50 percent lighter than conventional systems, thus aiding the sip rate and weight distribution of the vehicle. Even more surprisingly, sources also allege that a petrol-electic hybrid drivetrain is also in the works, integrating the brand’s Hy-KERS concept. Nonetheless, the FF is still a thirsty beast when you compare it to other V8s.

Pricing has not been touched on as of yet, however Ferrari fans can expect the FF’s arrival down under in late 2011. A variety of super-exxy options are also expected to be available, with the brand confirming an abundance of “personalisation options” will be on offer. When it does arrive, the FF is set to be one of the most exclusive and prestigious cars on the market.
