When it comes to Microsoft, we know that anything is possible – including venturing into new realms of technology. Aptly, Ford’s new vehicles are set to incorporate Microsoft’s ‘Hohm’, a cloud-based program used to manage and minimise the energy consumed when charging an electric car, making these vehicles “greener” than ever.
Ford and Microsoft have previously collaborated on projects such as ‘Ford Sync’, through which they created cars with entertainment and communication technologies. Similarly, Microsoft ‘Hohm’ does the same thing for vehicle energy management, allowing drivers to assess if their home can handle an electric car. This technology is particularly useful for consumers, in light of the fact that an electric car can double a household’s energy consumption. Furthermore, the ‘Hohm’ technology can assist electric car drivers in managing this energy consumption.
Microsoft and Ford intend to extend Hohm’s to include the entire “energy ecosystem”. Both companies are now conversing with utility companies in order to prepare the grid for the anticipated increase of electric cars. It is presumed that gradually, Hohm will become an all-inclusive solution for energy management, even allowing drivers to turn off their thermostat at home!
Microsoft Hohm is currently free to try in beta. The Ford Focus is the first car expected to incorporate the Hohm service.
