Marking its debut at this year’s Auto Show in Los Angeles, the Nissan Ellure’s future styling direction and mechanical advancements have finally been revealed. The new model, which has been promoted by the brand as “the sedan re-imagined”, will unfortunately not be bound for production according to Nissan’s Shiro Nakamura. Rather, the Ellure concept is a metaphorical declaration of the automaker’s dedication to the large sedan segment.
Described by the senior vice president as “an expression of our long-term vision for the next generation of great Nissan sedans” the Ellure is merely a concept that is destined to stay that way – a concept, an idea. Nonetheless, a sophisticated and rebellious idea at that. Nakamura san pledges that the Ellure honours the brand’s penchant for sedans with “unmatched daytime functionality” and “emotive, hidden ambience…after dark.”
Not confined to the usual production car design restraints, the styling team went crazy with their creative licence. The model features hinged ‘suicide doors’, 21-inch alloys, ‘boomerang’ lights, an audacious grille, abundant curves and a seamlessly sculpted, strong presence. Throw in the glass roof, short panels, and a sleek ‘minimalist’ interior aesthetic decked in elegant white leather, and grey and red suede, and we have an unprecedentedly fashion-forward showpiece.
The engineering is equally impeccable, leveled at augmenting the excitement of future driving and sustainable mobility. Beneath her hood, the Ellure integrates a combined power pack layout consisting of a supercharged 2.5-litre inline engine, 25kW electric motor, CVT transmission and front-wheel drive, while regenerative braking and drive-by-wire electric steering also join the dynamics setup. She sips frugally, with ‘Pure Drive’ badging to emphasise her low CO2 nature.
The brand does plan to further develop the eco-consciousness of its production range.
