Sydney Ranked Last for Motorists

Sydney may be a top tourist destination, however, it’s Australia’s worst city to drive in.

According to a national study by Virgin Car Insurance, Sydney has the least amount of parking spaces, the most expensive parking tickets, parking fines and tolls, despite the fact it is the most populated city.

This is the second year in a row Sydney has come last out of the eight capital cities and Adelaide has now become the most drivable city.

Compared to Melbourne’s 42,000 on-street parking spaces, Sydney drivers have to cope with just 10,483 spaces. In the CBD area, the average cost of two hours parking is $43.30 in Sydney, whereas it’s $20.00 in Melbourne and only $2.00 in Hobart.

In relation to road tolls, around $0.32 per kilometre is spent for Sydney drivers, whereas Melbourne and Queensland spend an average of $0.20 per kilometre. Another area that is fairly expensive for Sydney drivers is parking infringement fines, which are almost 50 per cent higher than Melbourne.

Sydney has been considered one of the most liveable cities in the world; however the extensive cost of owning a car has put an enormous amount of pressure on everyone’s budget and may result in many people coming off the roads.

Despite many areas where Sydney was the most expensive, it was not the worst city in all areas of the report. The other parts of the report included registration, comprehensive car insurance, price of petrol, expired parking fines and the number of car thefts.

Darwin is the most expensive for car insurance and Canberra is the worst city for registration, petrol and has the highest car theft rate.

This is how the eight cities ranked in the study from best to worst – Adelaide, Hobart, Perth, Darwin, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Sydney.
