To Scrap or Not To Scrap?

Is your car no longer whisper quiet? Does it take all your strength to change a gear? Or is the ten year old paint job no longer sticking? Either way, it might be time to consider if your car is scrap.

Although many of us grow attached to our cars, we cannot hide from the fact that we have to go our separate ways some day. If the car still runs, you may automatically think it is sellable. This may be the case in some situations, but in most cases it may only have a scrap value.

So, before spending money on selling the car only to find out it is not sellable, there are a few points to check. It is more than likely you have a scrap car if one or more of the following applies to your car:

  • The car is more than 10 years old
  • Ran out of MOT
  • Has a very short MOT
  • The bodywork is not looking good
  • Gearbox or engine problems
  • The car is uneconomical
  • The amount of money spent on the car to make it roadworthy is more that it’s worth.

If any of the above problems apply then it might be best to not put it up for sale until it is checked professionally as it may be un-roadworthy.

Just because you are not selling the car does not mean you cannot make cash. Scrap car disposal companies pay for un-roadworthy cars and their prices depend on various things. For example, if you have created extra weight such as any type of rubbish in the car, payments may decrease. Therefore giving the car a good clean out before can pay off.

Scrapping will also benefit the environment as the dealer will de-pollute the car and take out any dangerous materials such as oil, water and fuel.

There are plenty of scrap yard companies available, but ensure to choose an Environment Agency registered company.
