Low and behold, BMW has finally released its long-awaited X6 “Coupe”. If you haven’t already seen it around, the X6 is essentially a non-coupe labeled a “Coupe” and could be described more appropriately as a fastback SUV. As a follow-on from the X5, the X6 features a spectacular downward-sloping roofline, hence the evocation of a fastback coupe style. This vehicle undeniably makes a statement, however its audacious styling has divided reviewers.
The revised look of the new X6 is certainly bolder. With its dramatically sloped roofline, massive wheels and bolder, sculpted exterior, the X6 has a much sportier edge than its predecessor and other luxury SUVs. Some reviewers have likened its look to a “military weapon”, while others love its strong road presence.
The interior incorporates every aspect of luxury you would expect from a BMW. Leather interior comes as standard and the controls are high-tech. Some reviewers have labeled these high-tech cockpit controls as too complex, however this is not out of the ordinary for vehicles in this class. While the front seats have been praised for their comfort, there have been complaints about the more cramped rear seats. In the rear, there is limited headroom due to the roof-styling, and capacity for only two passengers, which is quite unusual for an SUV of this size and price point. Reviewers have applauded the quality of other standard features, such as the power-adjustable seats, glass moon-roof, parking assist, automatic climate control and a sound system comprising 10 speakers. There are other optional extras available; however these upgrades are at an additional cost to the already steep price point. For example, for $2000 more drivers can upgrade to a navigation system with a rear camera, voice activation and up-to-date traffic information. Other entertainment extras can be installed, such as sound packages, rear-seat DVD systems and disc changers; however these are also steeply priced. There has also been some contention surrounding the iDrive system features, however this is common for many infotainment systems.
Reviewers have found with the X6, that style certainly trumps utility. While the X6 offers a surprising amount of cargo space for its size, its utility pales compared to many midsize SUVs. Its 25.5 cubic feet cargo space beats that of some competitors, including the BMW X5 and the Infiniti FX) however, there are other competitors which are more practical. Nonetheless, there is a retractable cargo cover, dual cup-holders (both front and rear) and a centre console appropriate for storage. With the reduced space, the X6 is impractical for hauling large families or cargo, but rather a sporty diversion.
The X6 is available in two trims: the xDrive 35i or the xDrive 50i. Both are impressively powerful models. The 35i is fitted with a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and substantial torque. This trim handles exceptionally well for its height and weight. Leather, power front seats and impressive audio features are all standard with this variation. The 50i trim is a turbocharged V8 vehicle with more interior features. Its 4.4 litre engine can crank out 400 horsepower and 450-lb-ft torque. According to BMW, this model can accelerate from a standstill to 60km/ph in 5.3 seconds. Furthermore, performance upgrades are an option, which can see this power output increase to 320 hp and 440 hp, respectively. Furthermore, the X6 is also available in the X6 M version and the Active Hybrid X6.
The adaptive suspension of the X6 has received praise from many reviewers. This vehicle has phenomenal handling capabilities comparable to a sports sedan. The combination of its sport-tuned adaptive suspension system and BMW’s unique Dynamic Performance Control feature enables a powerful torque distribution, which aids traction, directional stability and the overall handling of the vehicle.
In terms of safety, the X6 is equipped with all the usual quality comprehensive safety features. Anti-Lock Brakes, Stability Control, Front, Side and Overhead airbags, Side Impact Bars, Occupant Sensors and Seatbelt Pretensioners are just a few of several safety features. There is also a Panic Alarm in case of other dangerous situations/hazards. Crash tests for the X6 have not been conducted as of yet. However, structurally the X6 is very similar to the X5 which scored 5/5 for frontal-impact driver protection tests and 4/5 for frontal-impact passenger protection tests. Additionally, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the X5 the highest rating in its frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests – if that is anything to go by.
To put it simply, the X6 is nothing to do with practicality and all to do with presence, performance and passion. Many of the X6’s limitations are of little consequence to the style-conscious consumer, however of greater disadvantage to those seeking substantial cargo and passenger space. Nevertheless, the X6 exemplifies the luxurious BMW gene, but manages to perpetuate an edgier, sportier aesthetic. While the bold styling may not be for everyone, the X6 is an exceptionally capable crossover for well-heeled buyers hoping to make a statement.

Personally I love the ‘coupe’ look. So much so I went out and bought the X6 and traded in my X5. Some people are pretty critical of the look, but I think its great – so “beasty” and such a road presence. Runs a treat too. Definitely recommending this vehicle.
I dislike the look. It screams “contrived” and is too audacious in my opinion. BMW didn’t do themselves any favours in producing this car, and I think many people would agree with me. An Audi Q7 or a Porsche Cayenne are much more aesthetically pleasing vehicles in this class.
The new look is a cracker! Waelon – you may think its audacious, but I would describe it as “beasty” and omnipotent!
Perhaps we will have to “agree to disagree” – personally I think the Q7 and Porsche Cayenne are visually too “safe” and understated.
In terms of the drive though, I wouldn’t be able to compare the three as I have only driven an X6, not the other two cars.
Well regardless, the X6 has had really successful sales/popularity in Australia
Pat, you are most certainly right. I will soon be uploading a news article under the “Car News” tab about the potential BMW X4, which continues the sporty, offroad “coupe” look.
